Shaleana Benson: Commander—LBPD East Division

Commander Shaleana Benson began her career with the City of Long Beach in 1991 as a Reserve Police Officer. She became a full -time civilian employee in 1995 as a Communications Dispatcher, served as a Communications Training Officer and was promoted to Assistant Supervisor until being hired as a Police Recruit in June 2004. She was promoted to Sergeant in 2013 and Lieutenant in 2020.


Commander Benson has worked a variety of assignments, including Media Relations, Community Engagement, Watch Commander, and in patrol. In addition to being the Department’s Drug Recognition Expert Instructor, she has served as the lead DUI education instructor for department personnel and community members for several years. She was responsible for implementing the “Know Your Limit” DUI education campaign and facilitating the “Every 15 Minutes” program at local high schools.


Commander Benson most recently created a department-wide response to Street Racing and Street Takeovers, which consisted of training LBPD personnel, and facilitating Department participation in the Los Angeles County Street Racing Task Force. She also played an integral role in creating the Long Beach City Municipal Code for Spectators in 2022.


Commander Benson holds a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice and Forensic Science from American Continental University and is a graduate of the Sherman Block Leadership and Leadership Long Beach. Commander Benson has been a volunteer member of the Civil Air Patrol for the past 11 years where she serves as the Deputy Commander of Cadets.
